Child rescued, man taken into custody following standoff in St. Pete


ST. PETE, Fla. — A child has been rescued and a man taken into custody after he barricaded himself and the child inside his truck following a domestic situation in St Pete last night, the St Pete Police Department said.

According to police, Matthew Perkins, 32, took a child from a house on Norfolk Street North after a domestic situation around 11:30 pm on Monday. He is known to the family.

Perkins drove himself and the child off in his 2009 pickup truck, which police found crashed under I-275 at Gandy Boulevard. Police alleged that Perkins was armed and acting erratically.

The child was rescued around 4:52 am Perkins has been taken into custody and will face numerous charges.

All lanes of Gandy Boulevard will reopen by 6:00 am
