Alabama quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young is reportedly expected to return from injury and start against Tennessee on Saturday.
Appearing on ESPN College GameDay on Saturday, college football insider Pete Thamel (h/t On3.com’s Andrew Graham) said Young is going to go through warm-ups and will start against the Volunteers, “barring anything unexpected.”
Young suffered a shoulder injury during a 49-26 win over Arkansas two weeks ago, and he did not play in last week’s 24-20 win against Texas A&M.
The Crimson Tide have played some uncharacteristically close games this season, leading to them being ranked No. 3 in the nation behind Georgia and Ohio State, but they are still a perfect 6-0.
Tennessee represents Bama’s toughest test yet, as the Vols are ranked No. 6 with a 5-0 record and are trending toward their best season in over two decades.
Heisman Trophy candidate Hendon Hooker is leading the way for Tennessee at quarterback with 1,432 yards, 10 touchdowns and no interceptions through the air, plus 231 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Hooker has shown that he can put up big offensive numbers for a Volunteers team that ranks second in the nation in scoring average, which made it integral for Alabama to get Young back for Saturday’s game.
Young threw for 4,872 yards, 47 touchdowns and seven picks en route to winning the Heisman and leading Alabama to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game last season.
He was off to a hot start this season as well, completing 67.2 percent of his passes for 1,202 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions in five games, along with 154 rushing yards and three additional scores.
Jalen Milroe started in place of Young last week, throwing for 111 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while also rushing for 81 yards.
Milroe acquitted himself well, but it was a tight game against Texas A&M, and it is fair to wonder if he would be able to keep up with the offensive firepower of Hooker and Tennessee.
Young undoubtedly gives Alabama the best chance to win and keep its hopes of an SEC title, a national championship and an undefeated season alive.
